I assume your truck is an automatic. I have been told that you can add a part to the automatic that will allow you to use lockout hubs. If interested, I will find out more. I have a 77 with mud and snow tires and do not have the trouble you are having. You can drive the truck in high loc with the front axle disengaged via lockout hubs, but I am not sure about the long term effect on the transfer case.
