Hi Lonnie,
Marine paint or a good industrial or tractor paint would be better than derusto. I used Derusto because I knew it was temporary.
I used a DA sander and spot primed any bare metal with rattlecan red oxide primer. Tack it down really well to get ALL of the dust off. I thinned the paint a bit and added Japan drier to it. I used a good china bristle brush. I had a 3" and a 2" angle tipp sash brush. I put on 3 coats, taking it slow and being very carefull to smooth out brush marks.
In the post below, I was asked why I didnt use a spray gun. I have a good spray gun and use it regularly spraying cabinets and other woodwork. However, on this project I tok it one body panel at a time. I started with a front fender and worked my way around the truck. I would do one panel after work each day. It kept it manageable.
Kevin McCarthy sent me to a web page of a guy who painted a car with foam brushes. He used about 6 or 8 coats and it looked beautiful, you wouldnt know it wasnt sprayed. I think for the amount of work he did he could have sprayed it 6 times.
But, the point is, it can be done and will be as good as you make it.
Good luck with it,
Tim
