Cannot say what current ammo prices are where you are, but 'normal' prices here would get you about 1500 rds of plinker 9mm for $300, that same amount of 22 would cost you about $45. The break even point for the conversion purchase would thus be at about 1750 rds expended if you are strictly purchasing factory plinking ammunition.

I do not know how much you plan to shoot, but I am a pretty dedicated pistol shooter and certified NRA instructor. For reference, I shoot at least 500 rds through a new pistol before considering it for defensive purposes or even whether to perform any modifications.

In an average year, I send about 4000 rds of pistol ammunition downrange, a little better than half of it 22. That puts me at the low side of what most of my shooting acquaintenances do who consider themselves dedicated pistol shooter.

It is not all about numbers of rounds downrange though, there is a lot you can do with much fewer rounds expended. Dryfiring is a good technique to improve trigger control and sight alignment. I usually drop the hammer about ten times dryfiring for each live round sent downrange.

What does that much practice do for you? Last year I bagged several limits of squirrels, all head shots and a nice buck at 75 yards. My regular target practice is at 2"x4" swinging steel plates at 25 yards which I can clean in less than 3 seconds from a holster. I also won an informal target competition last year by hitting two 10" round steel discs with four shots at 270 yds.
