How much does it spit out - like how far below the radiator neck is the water level after it's been spitting? The fact that there are no hydrocarbons in the radiator suggests the heads and gaskets are not leaking. As water heats up it expands and if you don't have an overflow system it will spit some water out, but will usually stop at a certain level. If you have an overflow bottle hooked up, the best way I know to set the correct level is to fill the radiator when the motor is cold and leave about a cup of coolant in the overflow bottle. Then run the motor up to operating temperature and see how high up the overflow bottle gets, let it cool down overnight and check levels next morning - if it's all back to where it was I usually add another cupful and that's it. Some rad caps are designed to be used with overflow some are not. Also some overflows are pressurized and some are not. Need to know what you have.
