leaking wheel cylinder

I noticed today that my wheel cylinder was leaking. I took the wheel and drum off and sure enough one end was leaking good. I now have sludge on the drum and shoes. Can they be cleaned with brake cleaner and still used? The shoes still have some life but I'm not sure if they can be saved.
