A router with a straight bit will work fine. Start in the middle and just spiral around until you get out to your line. Dont get greedy, just take a little cut, especially as you get toward the line. Yuo take too big a bite and the bit will grab and run out across your board, causing words you didnt even know to come out of your mouth! Also, I have seen folks use a router in any old direction. Look at the cutter and the way it spins and be sure you are having the cutting edge making the cut. Routers spin so fast that they will cut with the back but not as cleanly and with more chance of foul words. There are times when going backwards with a router is warrented, but you shouldnt need that.
