liquid fuel (especially diesel and biodiesel) is still the most efficient way to store energy.

Neil Young claims 100 mpg with his biodiesel/electric hyrbid '59 Continental. The '59 Lincoln probably weighs the same or more than a Power Wagon.

Liquid fuel is needed for long range. For short trips, a Nash Metropolitan or an MG would make great platforms for an all-eletric cruiser. They're light-weight, cute, and their original drivetrains were worthless anyway.
