I guess I wasn't clear, I said rust half way through (the break), not rusting through.
As for the gap, If you have no gap you could have no bead lock. As the plate bottomed out against the wheel will leave the tire pinch force strictly up to a common consistent industry bead thickness, and we all know not every tire has the same bead construction or thickness.
So a gap is necessary to ensure bead clamping force. I think the bead lock ring is not stiff enough.
