Booster can be anywhere as long as your vacuum pipe will reach it. Personally I like to keep the booster bleed screw below the level of the master cylinder, it tends to make life a little easier when bleeding (the brakes that is, not the skinned knuckles). The late M601's have the booster mounted to the chassis rail under the drivers seat.
