In my experience, a steerable front axle is dangerous on the highway. As you said, on a ranch or farm it would be good. The advantage is you have wheels front and rear so you the load is always pretty well balanced and you can easily uncouple it even if loaded. I've towed two container dollies (with the ends bolted together and no container) that had steerable front axles and the only way I could get it to stop jumping all over the road was to TIGHTLY chain the draw bar to the corners of the trailer. There was a pin that looked like it should lock it in place, but even that was too wobbly. At any speed above 20 mph or so, it would weave all over the place. I had to dog it down tight with chain binders. Of course I could only do that while it was coupled to the truck, or the binders would flip the end of the draw bar up or down. Bottom line -- good for hauling stuff around on the farm, not good for highway use.
