You guys were right. I jacked the front of the truck up, disconnected the front drive shaft, and turned the front wheels while engaged. I could hear the noise nd binding on the right side so removed that hub. The ears on the outer shaft were completely broken off. This explains why everything was fine in 4X2, the outer shaft was just free wheeling, but in 4X4 everything was locking up against the broken off pieces in the bottom. also explains why the steering got stiff.
Anyway, now I need an outer shaft and maybe a outer u-joint piece. Could have been a lot worse had the inner shaft broken.
