You mention about the 1/3 rejected for helath reasons. However, many men served in spite of health problems due to their sense of honor.
My father was technically unfit health-wise, but like many others, he was not about to stay home as a "4f". He withheld information about his asthma so he could serve. In most small towns at that time it was dishonorable to be home while the rest of the guys were fighting.
