He referrred to 1.30 shaft size...and ears, I think he was talking about shafts. That being said, our old PW is referred to as one ton stuff, right. D44 is 3/4 ton. Compare a 35 spline Dana 60 to a PW axle one ton vs one ton. There are SO many types of D44's, so good, some bad. A high pinion D44 though smaller ring gear would be way stronger that a PW axle IN THE FRONT. The 78-79 D44 axles were junk, I'm bet that is where cast broke on the one you saw???? No doubt PW ring gear is strong, but totally hamstrung by the coarse 16 splines that feed into it...you can not get around this weakness. Centered axles, meh, I have seen as many center rear axle shaft snap as a short side. And the short side, twists, not bends. Is that good engineering? The need a rear pto option so they offset the rear axle....seems like a short cut to me? Also, if the tracta/bendix is an inferior design, it's obsolete. A tracta joint at turning maximum is far weaker to a similar size ujoint, think about it. As for metallurgy, no myth, fact....todays one ton shafts are superior in grade and engineering. All have alloys not to mention aftermarket 4130, 4340, and 300M. Ujoints are the same, different grades. Jeeps....1/4 ton if that, apples and oranges, no argument here.
