i use the smith's cpes penetrating epoxy on anything like backing blocks, timbers, plywood, etc. is absorbs into the wood, makes it resistant to rot and increases the wood's strength. the west system stuff just sits on top of the wood the smiths is like diesel fuel in flow. a lot of folks are using the clear penetrating epoxy sealer as a base for varnish and swear by the results. i have no brightwork and i treat my teak with a dry semco finish. salt water and varnish dont like each other.
