I've had so much trouble with flaky senders or flaky gauges that nowadays I always bench-test the combination and make sure I get it working right. Old Dodge senders have a weak connection between the float arm and the mounting bracket that causes a lot of intermittent trouble. Also, 6 volt gauges can get burned out when somebody converts the truck to 12 volts and doesn't think about the gauge. There also seem to be lots of opinions about what gauges and what senders work for what year. Rather than shotgun it (keep replacing things randomly hoping to hit the problem eventually), I'd rather see the gauge point move smoothly as I work the float arm up and down on the bench.
