You don't want the Government to run manufacturing companies but you do want the Government to control companies manufacturing products by further regulating the design paramaters of the products with some sort of required quality level?
Just defining the "quality" that must be achieved would be a nightmare with the usual suspects of people who don't know anything about the process of designing and making things coming up with their own idea of what constitutes adequate quality and how to measure it. That would put a quick end to the manufacturing sector here in the US.
