It was probably a combination of time and heat. These locomotives we have are used a lot for switching and local work. Lots of starts and stops with engine brakes. Those wheels have seen lots of hot and cold in their day. Probably could have been metal fatigue that finally showed up. The spot where the crack started could have been slid a little bit by an engineer locking the brakes creating a flat spot that maybe could have created enough shock it started the crack. This is a rare thing for a wheel to crack like this. First one I have seen in 14 years.
