Both were invented by American companies (Litton and Ampex), but commercialized by Japanese ones. Litton could have made microwave ovens, but the military business paid better. Besides, Harvard Business School has consistently taught American managers that making stuff is for weenies, and devising ever more clever ways to shuffle money around is a much more respectable profession.
