I would think that 7" would be plenty. The only way it wouldn't be that I can think of, is if you side hill the truck and not the trailer. I have two goose necks, one like the one you show in the picture and a horse trailer. I have never measured what the clearence is there but I would be surprised if I have that much with the horse trailer. I haven't had a problem with that at all. I have a trnasfer tank in my truck and then a tool box. I have to watch the horse trailer hitting the tool box if I jack knife it.
If you want me to I can go our and hitch up to my goose neck flat bed tomorrow and measure the distance for you?
