I've always had good luck with Echos in the smaller sizes. With Stihl, you pay a real premium for the name. If you're really logging or bucking big logs out of the road/trail, a big Stihl can't be beat. Likewise if you cut big logs for firewood. I'm amazed at how much I get done with a little 14" echo, though. It's so much lighter for trail work and pruning. You can easily use it one-handed while up in a tree or on a ladder, or reaching out in some odd position on a trail. Echos have always been reliable for me, except that on the 20" one that was my only saw for years, the automatic oiler quit, and neither I nor the good saw shop here could fix it. You can't go wrong with a good used Stihl at a good price, but for my money, paying over $1000 for a new chain saw is just too much. I read somewhere that Husqvarna and Stihl are actually both made by the same company in the same factory nowadays.

What I would definitely avoid are any of the cheesy (usually brightly colored) "homeowner" chain saws sold at the big-box stores. I've specifically had bad experiences with Homelite and McCulloch years ago.
