Still doesn't sound like my idea of fun. The lore amongst the psychedelic mushroom people is that the way to get the high without the sickness is to drink the urine of someone who has eaten the muscaria. Supposedly this was the "nectar of the gods" in Nordic mythology and they had slaves who were forced to eat the mushrooms so as to produce the purified essence in their urine. But that also doesn't sound like my idea of fun. I guess that's why I've never been a druggie. I don't even like getting drunk.
But thinking of mushrooms, have you ever tried eating the truffles that the pack-rats collect? I'm sure you have them around your place. I've never found them in the wild, but pack rats apparently sniff them out, dig them up, and bring them home to their nests, because I find them quite often in pack rat nests. They're about an inch in diameter and smell very tasty when sliced. I'm sure they're edible, since I believe all truffles are edible, or at least non-poisonous. I just haven't quite brought myself to try them, though -- there's something about eating food that was collected by pack rats that kind of puts me off.
