it seems that drive line noise is a real problem for most owners on this site >i was thinking that there must be at least twenty five bearings turning in a power wagon when you are rolling > I am sure some one will get out a manual and count exactly and set me straight ! So well i have taken manny transmisions and rear axles a part and have rebuilt them esp OLD stuff > when i look closely at the bearings in old iron theres not wear per say but the bearings have lost there shine on the races and rollers and balls have a pitting or scaling > often the is not a wear failure but a aging process > i could go into length on the how and whys there have been books published on bearing wear and failure SAME FOR U JOINTS they may show no play but up on removal and inspection the surfaces will have been damaged > add all the surfaces that are involved with bearings and it adds up to noise if issuses are present > Gear noises on the other hand are more detectable UNDER LOAD or COAST and by listening and isolating the problem set which again is a diagnostic mission to find the noise IE fisrt gear to 4th , hi low range T case and so on so because something looks great externaly there is a lot of moving parts in a power wagon drive line and old parts at that . with some appreciable wear and along way from specs ~ Copey
