Well after doing the valve job and taking the '48 down the road, we discovered a new problem. When we first start the truck up oil pressure is 40-50 lbs on the gauge. Once the engine is warm and I start driving it the oil pressure drops from there to around 15lbs. I don't hear any rattles or strange noises but it is a little unnerving to see this. When I throttle up and go through the gears the oil pressure climbs a little but not much.

During the valve job we decided to pull the pan and see what it looked like inside. Our trucks engine has been rebuilt sometime in it's life as the pistons are.040 over and everything is nice and tight with no noticeable wear. There wasn't any sludge in the bottom of the pan as I was suspecting (the previous owner did absolutely no routine maintenance on it in 40+years of ownership. He only drove it around his 2 acre piece of property, so this could have been why it is in such good shape) In the bottom of the pan we found 2 little springs, 2 little balls, like ball bearings, and a bunch of wire shards like from a wire brush.

I was wondering if these could be the signs of the oil pump going bad? If I replace the pump will this help with getting oil pressure up? (I am running 40 weight Valvoline high mileage oil, we cleaned out the pick up screen on the oil pump and put a new oil filter cartridge in) I've been able to find a standard pump at NAPA, does anyone have a part number for a high pressure pump and could this beneficial or just a waste of money? any suggestion would be great.

Thanks,
Chris & Carston Becker
