Here is a picture of the driver side front axle closed knuckle, at some point in time through the life of the truck, someone must have hit something really hard with the drivers front tire. The lower pin on the knuckle has torn free of the housing, and you can see where the metal has split and deflected.

The steering seemed fine (only a little bit loose) when it was being towed around, but this sort of discovery could have been fatal if discovered at high speeds.
