Hi Tim.
I discovered something you might want to try. I had some drywall mud in a pan and let it set up and harden. So I was soaking it with water and laid a 4" drywall knife in the pan to soak. After about 3 or 4 days I took the knife out and noticed it was darkened and dull. Something in the drywall mud caused this. You might experiment with some chrome and see if it has the same results.
