I've seen other trucks that used a series/parallel setup with two 12 volt batteries. I don't think it's rare. The relay box hooks the batteries in series to give 24 volts for the starter motor, but otherwise they're in parallel for normal operation and they charge in parallel. Everything else in the system is 12 volt. One guy told me that 24 volt lights are illegal on big rigs, but I don't know if that's true or not. The reason for doing it is it's a lot easier to build a powerful starter on 24 volts than on 12, and the wiring to it only has to be half the size as well. Improvement of the starter is worth the extra complication of the relay box.
