I am sure that most guys who have had an axle failure will tell you that they twisted off and that the majority of the time it is the short axle that goes.
The gas tank was also offset to allow for the belt pully drive shafts. They did have full width tanks on the 3/4 ton WC trucks. My Carryall (WC53) has a 30 gallon tank. I just learned recently that there was apparently a larger tank available for the PW special order (someone ont this forum brought it up).
