It was on a late 70s International Loadstar with a 345 V8. Someone else started it, and left the choke on. Of course it flooded out and died within a few minutes. I was told it would not start, and played with it for a while before I got the whole story. Once I knew the cause of the problem I pulled the plugs, cleaned them, reset the gap, etc. The engine still would not fire, so I lightly filed the plugs to remove any oxidation, but it still would not fire, only pop a bit.

I then gave up and bought a new set of plugs, and it fired right up! It ran perfect from that day on every time I tried to start it.

It seemed weird to me at the time that cleaning, sanding, and filing the plugs would not be enough to deal with the flooding. Thinking about it now I would have tried sandblasting, that might have worked.

I have also had this problem with my old Volvo, it would flood in cold weather and nothing but new plugs would allow it to fire again. I kept a spare set in the trunk along with all the tools needed to swap them.

I wish I knew what caused those problems, but what I have learned is if all else fails swap the plugs! It has gotten more then one old engine started for me.

Eric
