I had a bad terminal at the 12v side of my coil.

Damn electrician (me) didn't get it all the way together before crimping AND soldering. So my white wire on my 3-wire alternator didn't keep the engine running with a feedback, the terminal had enough resistance to prevent that. Ran like an intermittent coil. I went nuts replacing it with all the used coils in my stock- every one worked good, then went bad. What I was doing is accidentally wiggling the bad terminal every time I replaced the coil. Not to mention all the carb problems I thought I had- jets, mixing tube, air bleeds......

Anyhow, once I fixed the terminasl, it wouldn't shut off, what with no idiot light bulb in the white wire circuit. So I unhooked the white wire from the ign switch, and it shut off. And I still haven't hooked up the white wire. I guess it's only needed on factory new alts, used/rebuilts have enough residual magnetism to self-excite. So I learned something- after three weeks of tearing my hair out!
