There are also intentionally hard wires, used to built up surfaces that are exposed to much abrasion, like dozer parts. Maybe your buddy thought he was doing you a favor?

Regular mig wire is a bit tougher than base metal, but still machinable.

Related question, the surplus store has a 90xx (18? 14? I didn't write it down)series rod, 50# for $30. Any guess as to if I want any?
