It is true that pattern and backlash are both very important in the overall performance of a ring and pinion gear set. However, you only have one chance to set pattern - once a gear set it run-in, you should duplicate the pattern as precisely as possible. So, in Will's case of installing the locker using his original gear set, his decision to leave the pinion in place (ok if the bearings are tight and smooth) and focus on backlash follows most manufacturers recommendation.

On a used gear set, having a perfect pattern is second to running in the wear pattern of the original setup according to most manufacturers recommendation. Overlapping surface contact can cause premature gear failure and/or noisy operation.
