Start it up at night in a dark place and have a helper watch the wires. From the ignition switch, pull push wires and watch for sparks. Do the same on wires from the gen. to the reg., coil to dist. You might be able to isolate quickly which wire is causing the problem. If this produces no results, take the gen. apart and the field winding out. Look at the areas where the windings lay against the gen. housing for bare copper metal. You might be able to buy shellac at NAPA to repair the area.
