Are you sure the holes were tapered because they made the rivet joint stronger? I think it's more likely the holes were tapered because they were punched rather than drilled, and part of the reason for using rivets was that they would make up for those tapered, crooked, or misaligned holes. They're also cheaper, and on a production-line setup with all the right tools, probably just as fast to install (faster if you count not having to deal with misaligned holes).
