im in close proximity to nyc so i have little chance of testing a points ignition after an event but will keep my generator and spare dist at the ready! i'll keep my diesel boat tanks full too! i believe that a petronix ignition (or a mopar kit, or whatever) is a great upgrade on a less than daily driver as points tend to have problems when they sit. also, the quality of modern points and parts is not what it used to be. m37 coils are a prime example. a good used usa coil is always better than a new one that is imported. my spare echlin points, condensor and rotor (im not sure about the rotor)which i keep in my truck if my pertronix fails, are all imported - mostly mexican in origin. i believe them to be inferior to old parts that were once available. i'd be really interested to learn more about mike stones (please jump in mike) flathead that went 435k. i never figured that a flathead block would stand that kind of use without many rebuilds eventually requiring sleeving boring and resleeving which would make less sense than using a fresh block at some time. i also would think that 435k would be a world record on a 1948 ffpw frame and suspension. if the truck was fully zero timed every 100k miles, it would also likely be the most expensive 48 out there. i dont think there is a single system on an orig 48 that wouldnt be worn out in that amount of time. carb, trans, driveline, frame, door hinges, cranks, wipers, winch, shocks and mounts, spring bushings, frame rivets, etc. 435k miles at 15mph (likely the average speed) is 29000 hours without idling. 29000 hours / 61 years = 475 hours per year. you'd wear your ass out to be sure!
