Initial is usually about 10° at idle, +/- a couple, where ever it runs best.
The 0 mark is usually bigger or deeper, though some have 1/4" slot that is for an electronic pick up that senses the absence of that much iron. Your problem lies elsewhere, NOT timing, You did it right.
Might be a loose wire, or infant mortality of the component? Or, just by chance, something unrelated went haywire.
