Fuel problems tend to show up mostly on steep grades. Dirt or a badly-set float cause problems then. Gunk in the fuel tank or the carb inlet is unlikely to cause a brief cutout due to a bump, since there's enough fuel in the carb bowl to carry it through a short drop in supply. I vaguely recall being told of a common problem with old jeeps starving of fuel on a certain direction of steep grades.
