Thank goodness you were alone and only the car was "totaled". That is all that matters, the car can be replaced.
I saw a guy driving a "smart car" the other day outside Fredericksburg, VA. We don't have moose, but if he had hit a buck with that thing he would have been in the same boat as you. Those cars look to be worse than VW beetles as far as what might happen in an impact, although I guess they have a crumple zone?
The older I get the more I appreciate bigger vehicles from the safety aspect.
