24 volt DC from a forklift charger offers maximum performence, plenty of them can be had cheap from forklift shops because they no longer deliver sufficiently to charge batterys.

The best electrode is carbon/graphite because it doesn't let the rust stick to it. Run 24/7 at full efficiency.

Best results @24 volt is acheived at 10 amps, more current just wastes off as heat.

Do not use lye or stainless steel in the tank, no gain is acheived and ss generates nasty HazMat.

Current is easily controlled by submerged surface area of the accumulating electrode. Surface area of the accumulator should match or be greater than the object being derusted for best results.

The solution life is infinite. Add water only to return to the original level. The only exception occurrs when objects corroded with saltwater rust are cleaned.
Saltwater rusted objects should have the salt soaked out first using clear water.

A garden PH meter is handy to confirm ph is alkaline.
Every now and again you can blow the solution when an object being cleaned has salt or acid deposits. Generally the best thing to do in that situation is dump the tank and start over.

The picture at the bottom of that page proves a tank can run 24/7/365 without a scumlayer on top.
