The trouble with that is that methanol is hard to buy at retail. I have a gallon that was sold as mimeograph fluid (remember those?) but I never even see that any more. I'm certain it would cost at last $10/gallon, which makes for some pretty expensive washer fluid. The guys making biodiesel run up against this problem fairly soon -- you need methanol to make proper biodiesel but nobody will sell a few barrels of it to DIY biodiesel makers, at least not at any price that makes it worth using. There are lots of industrial chemicals that are dirt cheap if you buy them by the rail car, and pretty much unavailable otherwise.
