Sticks to cast, iron, and malleable. Malleable is cast iron that is baked for several days at over 800 degrees, which cooks the excess carbon out of the cast. Also called 'semi-steel'. I think that a lot of what people think is cast iron is actually malleable. I tell by drilling a bit. Steel makes long stringy chips, cast makes dust, malleable makes dust and small chips mixed.

Anyhow, silicon bronze rod work hardens, and develops 100,000 psi tensile strength, like alloy steel. And it sticks to cast, malleable, or steel. Plus is lots cheaper than nickel rod. And is ultimately a built in bronze bushing! Works well with sanding discs. Plugs grindstones.

You do need an acetylene rig, with a slightly oxidizing flame- to help burn off some of the excess carbon.

I just did some milling on a nickel-cast repair. Nickel seemed soft and gummy. I wish they had used bronze, it was a tool rest for that Tiawanese lathe I just bought.

Oh well, by two cents worth. On the net, I've got an opinion, and you've got a right to it.
