Okay, I'm not looking at it so I don't know what it is. I'm pretty sure they didn't use flat CARC camo paint before 1970, or definitely not before 1970, but I'm only going by what I've seen, not by any official statements. As I understand it, CARC is a polyester automotive type paint that's extra-thick and extra-flat compared to other paints. The "chemical resistant" part of its name comes from the fact that it's supposed to be easier to decontaminate chemical warfare agents off of than conventional flat paint, which tends to absorb them. It's a very hard paint, and a good one, but as I said, the surfaces were never properly prepped for applying it over old SG paint.

We've all heard that the dust from CARC is poisonous, but I've never been clear on just why that is. Some say it's heavy metals in the pigment or something they add to make it neutralize nerve gas or something like that. Some people even say it's "radar-absorbing" but I don't believe that. I do know it's just about impossible to buy actual CARC paint.

It seems to me that if you sandblast it down to where the remaining paint is well stuck and has a rough surface, it doesn't much matter what kind of paint that is. The bottom layer is certainly not CARC, but so long as the old paint is well stuck and you're not needing a smooth and perfect paint job, it doesn't matter. I don't have any truck or trailer with CARC where I think any of the CARC is well enough stuck to serve as a base for a decent repainting job, but for my purposes, I'm happy to scrape off the loose stuff by hand, and paint over it, even though I know I'll have to scrape and paint some more in a few years.
