Alternately, every other one. Most businesses were harder on themselves than the FD boys.

And so far as EMS goes, it's usually a wash whether to wait for the ambulance or haul the patient to the ER immediately. Seems you can make a one-way trip as fast as the ambulance can get to you. Then the patient is at the hospital, with MDs, not a paramedic.

Then, around here, the whole firetruck also responds to ambulance calls. Oh, it's handy for the 600 pound welfare recipient, but the rest of the time?

Only about 2% of fire calls are for building fires, burned down houses are quite rare. I tend to think that some cut backs can be made without ruining life as we know it.

One of our local fire departments has a ladder truck good for geez, hmm 150 feet? Ya know, with the extra driver at the rear end of the trailer? Yet the town has building ordinances limiting heights to 25 feet. The captain of that truck is a FFPW owner, who posts here. He says it might come in handy some day for fighting fire from across the landscaping, without driving a smaller truck across the lawn. $2,000,000 truck. Is that the way a private business would invest?
