clean out the gunk and then switch to detergent oil (i like rotella) & continue to use the stock filter system which works well. synthetic would be the best, but it has a habit of sneaking past seals in old engines. if you did a full rebuild and somehow were able to update all seals with new technology, then maybe.

frequent oil changes are the key to a flathead engine's survival. most of us drive them too little and put them back in the garage before we have gotten them hot enough to heat out the condensation in the gear boxes and get the oil hot enough to do its thing.

i'm in the big truck business. as a buyer, I have seen everything from preignition oil injection (which does remove wear), to % change oil systems that remove a portion of the oil as you drive and replace with fresh oil from an external tank, to full synthetic fluid equipped trucks. in a million mile application, they have merits. in a power wagon with a stock engine how many miles will you do? im in the hobby a bunch of years and am driver / user. i doubt that ive put 20k on my 2 trucks combined. i likely have done 15 oil changes due to the fact i never get to the mileage before i deem the oil to be 'old'. old oil gets acidic and does more damage than anything else. keep your oil fresh. change it twice a year & if you want, only change the filter once a year if that suits your sensibilities. the new gas formulations and lack of use are the 2 big killer of your engine today. i use stabil in my truck which has a nos tank that was renued before i put gas in it. i only keep 5 or so gallons in it when in storage mode & either drain it or fill the tank before firing it up.
