Dennis:

I would suspect that it twised off an axle. Also if it does actually have a tapered end on the outboard end, this is a real weak spot. The end of the axle has a keyway in it. The axle flange has a hole that is slightly tapered and has a keyway. The axle flange is held in place by a large nut and the key in the keyway. Often the nut backs off and the key is sheared. Once that happens no power goes to the "wheels". You can check by removing the axle ends. you will also know at this time if the axle is broken without taking the diff apart. If the axles are fine then you will have to tear into the diff.

Willys had the same set up and were noted for twisting off the key when the nut loosened. You can often get a 1 piece axle to resolove this problem.
