Are you sure that you do not have the noise under accelleration? You may not hear it because of the engine noise which is usually greater under accelleration than when you are using gear driven compression going down hill.

What is the condition of the differential oil. Have you drained it? Did it have water or metal in it. Are you low on oil? Remember that you are also running on different sides of the gears under accelleration and decelleration. Look at the gears if you can take the diff cover off.

I might try a couple of things as noise travels and it may not be where you think it is. The most likely places are in the transfer and front axle as you know. However, look at the u joints in the front driveline they could be failing. Also look to see if your front drive line is in phase. That can cause a lot of noise and will result in U joint failure. Look at the bottom of the page at this link for phasing information. http://jniolon.clubfte.com/drivelinephasing/drivelinephasing.html Someone could have taken your driveline out and remove the slip yoke and put it back out of phase. I have found this in many vehicles.

Just run though a bunch of tests trying to isolate the noise. I have listed a couple below.
1) Is the noise there in all gears?
2) Is the noise there in both 4 HI and Low?+ If the noise is in the transfer case you may see a difference between low and hi as bearings are used in one case and the gears lock up in another. This could be a source of a lot of your noise as you are latterally transferring power through several gears and associated bearings that are not normally turning in 2wd.
3) Turn the hubs on the axle to the free position and try running again. See if the noise is there in hi and low.
4) Put the Hubs in Lock then remove the front drive line and run in it 2 WD and 4 Hi and Lo. Is the noise there when you are in 2 WD and the hubs are engaged. You may be just hearing the front axle and diff running where you normally do not in 2wd.
5) Consider the wheel bearings and the bushings at the axle ends.
