First thing to do!!!!

Put a vaccum gauge on your intake manifold. Run through the tests at this link http://www.secondchancegarage.com/public/186.cfm.
They should give you a very good idea what is going on with your engine.

Next do a full electrical tune up. All new parts. You do not know what you have at this time. Be sure to check the insulation where the wires come out of the distributor it may be leaking. Replace the plugs and wires. They may be arcing when you are under load.

Then look at the carb.

A quick test you can try is this. When you are accellerating in 3rd or 4th pull the choke out sightly. If the engine runs a little better with a little choke, go through the carb and make sure that all the jets are correctly sized. You should have a govenor on the carb. These carbs have larger jets than the rebuild kits have (which were targeted at non-govenor carbs). I rebuilt my carb as it was leaking and the float valve was shot. When I was done it did not have the power that it had before the rebuild. I tried everything. Finally I pulled out all the jets in the carb and compared them to the ones I took out in the rebuild. All of the replacement jets were smaller. I put the original jets back in (there were fine to begin with but I put the new ones in as they were in the kit). Problem solved. The power was back to where it was before with out the gas leaks around the gaskets.

I am not sure where there is a listing of the jet sizes for that carb but someone here should know.
