If it was me I would move the carrier to the passenger (correct) side. It would be easy to weld closed the holes on the driver side during your restoration.
2nd series beds are like hens teeth, so unless one falls in your lap so to speak, imho I would keep the 3rd series bed.
I have a '52 B-3 with the 2nd series bed, getting near the end of the restoration process.
