Old floor jacks...

One of the things I have never done is disassemble a hydraulic jack. My guess is that it is not so complicated, yet I wonder if there are any particular tricks to know about.

Is the repair primarily just disassembly and cleaning, with subsequent replacement of seals? Is there any magic to the disassembly? Do you just unscrew what appears to be a large packing nut? Do you hone a bore? I could use a few hints....

It seems most floor jacks sold today are made in some distant land, look as if they were made from old Yugo fenders, and have questionable parts availability. I would like to get an additional floor jack, a dual wheel dolly, and possibly a hydraulic floor jack.

I would rather pick up an old Walker or Blackhawk, preferably a four ton, and recondition it, rather than buy a new one that makes me uneasy. Also, what sizes and respectable brands could be found in a jack larger than four ton capacity? The shop for old trucks should be populated by old jacks, don’t you think?

What comments does anyone have on this subject?
