The sludge is normal after many years. There is also sand in the block from when it is made. If you have the engine out, put it on an engine stand and flush it. I usually just use a garden hose and a coat hanger. Tilt the engine to one side and remove all the plugs. Run water in one side and poke around with the hanger. The engine will run much cooler afterward and if you have pinging problems, they may lessen a bit.

One caveat though, make sure you wet the concrete down BEFORE you start flushing or the rust may stain the concrete. A little Dawn dish washing detergent afterward, and it will look just like it did before.
