I'm not saying it's right, but when I went through my M-37 a couple years ago I packed the hell out of that cavity with a primium synthetic grease. It had grease in it when I took it apart, so I didn't think twice about it. The axle tube has seals in it just inward of the bronse bushing in the end of the housing. I would think that if they wanted gear lube in that knuckle that there would be no need for that seal.
By the way, do you have a source for those bronse axle bushings at a reasonable cost? Dad needs a set for his '48.
